Gardeners Urged to Follow 9am Rule During UK Heatwave Amid Hosepipe Bans
Gardeners Urged to Follow 9am Rule During UK Heatwave

Gardeners across the UK are being urged to follow a 9am rule during the ongoing heatwave, as several water companies have introduced hosepipe bans affecting millions of households. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has extended heat-health alerts, with yellow warnings in place across much of the country until Friday, July 17.

Hosepipe Bans and Water Conservation

With temperatures soaring, water companies have enforced restrictions to preserve supplies. Gardening expert Gareth Mitchell shared practical advice to keep plants healthy without relying on a hosepipe, emphasizing the importance of water conservation during the heatwave.

Reuse Water Wherever Possible

“During a hosepipe ban, reusing water is key to maintaining a healthy garden while supporting the broader conservation efforts needed during a heatwave,” said Mitchell. He recommends collecting rainwater and, during dry spells, recycling greywater from showers, baths, and even tumble dryers. “Soil acts as a natural filter, and in some cases, residues may offer a mild fertilising effect. Just avoid water containing harsh chemicals or bleach.”

Prioritise Pots and Container Plants

“Pot-grown plants and trees are particularly vulnerable to drying out and burning in hot, dry conditions, as they rely entirely on watering for moisture,” Mitchell warned. He advises watering them daily and relocating them to shaded areas to minimise evaporation. In-ground plants, however, often retain moisture around the root zone even during a heatwave, so gardeners should avoid overwatering them.

Water at the Right Time

Mitchell strongly recommends watering before 9am. “Watering early in the morning, ideally before 9am, takes advantage of cooler temperatures and significantly reduces water loss through evaporation. This not only conserves water but ensures it reaches the roots where it’s most needed,” he explained.
