Four essential oils to keep wasps away from gardens this summer
Four essential oils to keep wasps out of your garden

Wasps are generally active from April to October, but experts say the UK is approaching the aggressive peak of wasp season. By August, the social structure of a wasp colony changes, turning workers into aggressive scavengers as food stores run low.

Natural defences against wasps

Pest control specialists recommend using strong-smelling essential oils to deter wasps. Because wasps rely heavily on scent to find food, these oils overwhelm their systems, making the area less appealing.

The most commonly recommended oils are peppermint, clove, citronella, and eucalyptus. Their bold, lingering fragrances are popular in outdoor products designed to discourage flying pests.

Application tips for best results

Essential oils evaporate and fade quickly outdoors, especially in wind, heat, and sunshine. To keep wasps away effectively, reapply or replace your essential oil mixtures every two or three days. Place solutions in shady spots such as under table leaves, chairs, or roof overhangs to extend their lifespan.

Simple habits also help: keep sweet drinks and food covered when outside, clear up fallen fruit from trees, and empty bins often with lids shut tight.
