Former NFL quarterback P.J. Walker has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 31. The signal-caller decided to end his playing career after nine years in the sport, most recently with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. The team confirmed his decision on Thursday.
Early Career and College Days
Walker began his professional journey after going undrafted in the 2017 NFL Draft, signing as a free agent with the Indianapolis Colts. However, he never appeared in a regular-season game for the Colts, spending three seasons on their practice squad. He played college football at Temple University before entering the NFL.
XFL Breakthrough and NFL Return
In 2020, Walker joined the XFL's Houston Roughnecks, where his strong performances earned him another NFL opportunity. He signed with the Carolina Panthers and eventually made his long-awaited NFL debut. After serving as a backup in 2021, he started five games for Carolina in 2022 before departing in free agency.
Later NFL Stints
Walker later had brief periods with the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, and Seattle Seahawks. Over 21 NFL appearances, he completed 185 of 339 passes for 2,135 yards, six touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
Move to the CFL
Walker joined the Calgary Stampeders in 2024 after being released by the Seahawks, spending two seasons as a backup in the CFL. His retirement marks the end of a journeyman career that spanned multiple leagues and teams.
