Chelsea are preparing to make a significant investment in a new goalkeeper this summer, with Sunderland's Robin Roefs emerging as a primary target ahead of Xabi Alonso's first season as manager. The 23-year-old Dutchman, who joined Sunderland for £9 million last summer, is now valued at £50 million after an impressive Premier League campaign that included 10 clean sheets.
The Blues confirmed on Sunday that Alonso will take over from July 1, replacing the outgoing manager. The 44-year-old Spaniard inherits a squad that has underperformed this season, with Chelsea's hopes of European football now slim after their FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City. Despite these struggles, Alonso's appointment is seen as a major coup, and the club is expected to back him heavily in the transfer market.
According to reports, both Chelsea and Liverpool are keen on Roefs, whose performances have drawn attention amid uncertainty over their current first-choice goalkeepers. At Chelsea, Robert Sanchez has faced scrutiny since joining from Brighton, while Liverpool's Alisson has been linked with a move to Juventus. Roefs has been a standout for Sunderland, who have exceeded expectations this season.
Alonso, who was sacked after just seven months at Real Madrid, outlined his ambitions in his first statement as Chelsea manager. 'From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition,' he said. 'We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.'
