Bath SUV Parking Tax Plan Sparks Outrage

Residents in Bath have reacted furiously to a council proposal to charge for parking permits based on vehicle size, a first for England. The Liberal-Democrat-controlled Bath and North East Somerset Council is consulting on the plan, which critics say unfairly targets individuals and families with disabilities who often require larger cars.

The scheme would introduce supplementary charges for larger vehicles and discounts for smaller ones, aiming to reduce congestion and pollution. A similar policy was adopted in Cardiff last autumn. Former taxi driver Bob, 63, called the plan 'outrageous,' arguing that higher charges won't deter drivers and that public transport improvements are lacking.

Visitor Julian Knight, 51, said parking fees are already high, with £50 for two nights, but he would still visit family. However, some residents support the change. Jayne Mallon, 63, said bigger vehicles should pay more as they take up more space and cause more pollution.

Tina Kerr, 56, from Warminster, agreed with the rules but stressed the need for better public transport, noting that train services are expensive and unreliable. Councillor Joel Hirst said the proposal aims to encourage safer, smaller, and cleaner vehicles, improving air quality. Councillor Mandy Rigby highlighted the availability of Park & Ride sites as alternatives.
