Flat White vs Latte: Barista Explains Key Differences in Coffee Drinks
Barista Explains Flat White vs Latte Differences

A former barista has settled the debate between flat whites and lattes, explaining that despite their similarities, they are distinct beverages. Having worked in New Zealand for several years, the barista encountered many customers who believed the two drinks were identical or that a flat white was simply a smaller latte.

Key Differences in Preparation

Both drinks contain a double shot of espresso and steamed milk, but the ratios and techniques differ significantly. A latte uses more milk, resulting in a milder, sweeter flavor, while a flat white has less milk for a stronger coffee taste. The milk steaming process also varies: lattes require thicker, velvety foam created by adding air to the milk, whereas flat whites need minimal foam to achieve a flat, glossy surface.

The Flat White

Originating in Australia or New Zealand in the mid-1980s, the flat white became popular in the UK after 2005, especially when Costa Coffee and Starbucks added it to their menus in the 2010s. The drink is known for its lack of foam, making it challenging to perfect. The barista noted that the milk should be textured with only about 0.5 centimeters of foam, and the coffee should look glossy without risk of spilling.

The Latte

The latte dates back to mid-1800s Italy, where warm milk was added to espresso to create a milder drink for American tourists. Today, a latte features a thicker milk foam, about half a fingernail wide when poured. It is milkier and easier to make than a flat white, according to the barista.

Which One to Choose?

If you prefer a stronger, more espresso-forward coffee, opt for a flat white. For a sweeter, milder beverage with a creamy texture, a latte is the better choice. Both drinks offer unique experiences, so understanding the differences can help you order with confidence.
