UK Households Urged to Claim New £299 Cost of Living Payment Before Spring Deadline
£299 Cost of Living Payment: Final Deadline Approaches

Time is running out for millions of British households to secure vital financial support, as the final instalment of the government's Cost of Living payments arrives with a strict spring deadline.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is urging eligible recipients to ensure they qualify for the £299 payment, which represents the third and last tranche of support designed to help vulnerable families through the ongoing economic crisis.

Who qualifies for the payment?

Eligibility for the payment hinges on whether claimants were receiving certain benefits during the qualifying period between November 13th and December 12th, 2023. The support extends to those on:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit

For those receiving tax credits exclusively and no other DWP benefits, the payment will be processed by HMRC rather than the DWP.

When will payments arrive?

The DWP has confirmed that the vast majority of eligible households will receive their £299 payment automatically between February 6th and 22nd, 2024. The money will appear in bank accounts with the specific reference 'DWP COL' followed by the claimant's National Insurance number.

This payment is tax-free, does not count towards the benefit cap, and will not affect existing benefit awards.

Final chance for support

This marks the conclusion of the government's current Cost of Living support package, which has provided over £2,000 to vulnerable households across three payments since 2022. The previous payments were for £301 and £300, making the total support £900 for those eligible for all three instalments.

Mel Stride, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, emphasised the importance of this support: "We are committed to protecting the most vulnerable households during a period of economic challenge. These payments represent a significant intervention to help millions manage their essential costs."

Experts are advising those who believe they should qualify but don't receive the payment by February 23rd to contact the relevant government department immediately, as the window to claim this crucial support is rapidly closing.
