Why I Ditched Powder Detergent for Liquid and Never Looked Back
Why I Ditched Powder Detergent for Liquid Laundry

Laundry is a chore that can often seem relentless. Just as you finish one load, more clothes and towels pile up, leading to heavy detergent usage. With numerous laundry products on the market, one key item many households love using is powder detergent—but I have ditched it for good.

The Downside of Powder Detergent

Growing up, we only used powdered laundry detergent scooped from huge cardboard boxes. When I started doing my own washing, I discovered the benefits of liquid detergent and have never looked back. Although powder is typically cheaper, it never dissolves well at lower temperatures. I wash my black and coloured clothing at 30 degrees Celsius, which often left powder residue all over my clothes after the cycle ended.

To use powder at low temperatures, I had to dissolve it in warm water first—an extra step that was inconvenient. Even on hot washes, my clothes came out with a waxy film that required an extra rinse. Additionally, powder contains fillers that build up quickly in the washing machine, leading to blockages and more frequent cleaning. Storing powder correctly is also crucial; otherwise, it clumps and cakes up fast.

The Benefits of Liquid Detergent

Since switching to liquid detergent, I have noticed a huge improvement in how clean my clothes feel and smell. Liquid dissolves easily in water at any temperature, even as low as 20 degrees. My clothes come out smelling fresh and feeling clean. Liquid detergent is also more effective at removing stains, particularly in hard water areas—a huge plus for me. While powder can be used with hard water, it requires more detergent for a proper clean.

Residue from liquid detergent builds up less in my washing machine, provided you use the right amount. I use two liquid pods for a full load, which provides just the right amount of detergent. My top two liquid detergents are Fairy and Persil.

Conclusion

Ditching powder detergent for liquid has transformed my laundry routine. My clothes are cleaner, fresher, and my washing machine requires less maintenance. If you are still using powder, consider making the switch for better results.
