Consumers on the US East Coast are being urged to check their refrigerators following a new food safety recall. Supermarket chain Wegmans has issued a voluntary recall for one of its cheese products over potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Details of the Wegmans Recall
The affected product is the Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese sold with Wegmans' scale labels. According to an official notice from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall was initiated on 26 November 2025 after the cheese supplier alerted Wegmans to the potential issue.
The cheese was sold at Wegmans stores in a number of states between 14 November and 25 November 2025. The states involved are Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
All lot codes of the product have been pulled from shelves. Customers can identify the recalled tubs by the UPC code 2-77580-XXXXX-7, where the "XXXXX" varies depending on the item's weight.
A Second Cheese Recall This Week
This is the second major cheese recall announced in recent days. Earlier this week, Boar's Head recalled three of its Pecorino Romano cheese products, including its Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese and Pecorino Romano Cheese.
A separate recall was also issued for the Boar's Head Pecorino Romano Wedge by the Ambriola Company. These recalls were initiated as a precautionary measure due to potential Listeria concerns in other products. All three of the recalled Boar's Head cheeses were sold nationwide, and customers are advised to return them to their point of purchase.
Health Risks and Consumer Advice
While no illnesses have been reported in connection with either recall, the situation is being treated with utmost seriousness. The recall for the Boar's Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese and Boar's Head Pecorino Romano Cheese has been classified by the FDA as a Class I recall. This is the most serious type of recall, indicating a situation where using a product may cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
Listeria infection, or listeriosis, can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals can include a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, and abdominal pain.
The CDC identifies Listeria as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States, responsible for approximately 260 fatalities each year.
Customers who have purchased the recalled Wegmans cheese should not consume it. They are instructed to return the product to any Wegmans store for a full refund. Anyone concerned about potential illness should contact a healthcare provider immediately.
