Wawa Recalls Popular Beverages Over Undeclared Milk Allergy Risk
Wawa Recalls Drinks Over Undeclared Milk Allergy Risk

Convenience store giant Wawa has initiated a significant recall for several popular beverages sold across its network, citing the presence of undeclared milk that could pose severe health risks to individuals with milk allergies. The recall affects four distinct drink varieties distributed in stores throughout Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Affected Products and Distribution Details

The recall encompasses Wawa Iced Tea Lemon in 16-ounce pint bottles, which were available in 123 stores across all five states, with a date of May 15, 2026, marked on the bottles. Additionally, Wawa Iced Diet Tea Lemon in 16-ounce pint bottles, sold in eight stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and dated May 18, 2026, is included. Wawa Diet Lemonade in 16-ounce pint bottles, found in 12 stores in Delaware and New Jersey with a date of May 18, 2026, is also part of the recall. Lastly, Wawa Fruit Punch in 16-ounce pint bottles, available in 53 stores across Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, and dated May 19, 2026, is affected.

Health Risks and FDA Warning

The primary concern stems from the beverages potentially containing milk, which is not listed on the ingredients label. This omission poses a serious threat to the approximately six million Americans who suffer from milk allergies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a notice warning that consumption of these products could lead to serious or life-threatening allergic reactions for those with milk allergies.

Symptoms of a milk allergy can include hives, wheezing, coughing, congestion, and swelling of the face and throat. In severe cases, it may trigger anaphylaxis, a rapid and potentially fatal allergic reaction that requires immediate treatment with epinephrine, such as an EpiPen or nasal spray. Experts estimate that between 150 and 200 Americans die annually from allergen-induced anaphylaxis, highlighting the critical nature of this recall.

Recall Classification and Company Response

While the recall has not yet been officially classified, it may later be designated as a Class I recall, indicating a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. Wawa has proactively removed all affected products from the impacted stores and is urging customers who have purchased these beverages to discard them immediately and contact the company for a refund.

In a statement, Wawa explained that the recall was initiated after identifying and correcting a temporary equipment issue that may have led to the presence of the undeclared milk allergen. The company emphasized its commitment to customer safety, stating, 'Wawa’s primary concern is always for the health and safety of our customers and associates. In the public’s interest, we have removed this product from sales at all of the impacted stores and activated this recall.'

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, but authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Consumers are advised to check their purchases and heed the warnings to prevent any potential health emergencies.
