Food Safety Watchdog Confirms Toxin in Nestle Baby Formula
Toxin Found in Nestle Baby Formula

The Food Standards Agency has issued a significant public health alert after confirming the presence of a dangerous food poisoning toxin in multiple Nestle baby formula products. This development follows the voluntary recall of several batches earlier this month, with investigations pinpointing the source of contamination to a shared third-party ingredient supplier.

Confirmed Contamination and Product Recall

The FSA has verified that the affected ingredient in SMA infant formula products is arachidonic acid oil, commonly known as ARA oil. This nutritional component plays a crucial role in infant development and is typically added to formula to ensure babies who are not breastfed receive essential nutrients. However, testing has revealed this specific ingredient batch contained cereulide toxin, which can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps when consumed.

Affected Products and Safety Measures

Nestle has recalled numerous batches across their SMA product range, including:

  • SMA Advanced First Infant Milk
  • SMA Advanced Follow-On Milk
  • SMA Anti Reflux
  • SMA Alfamino
  • SMA First Infant Milk
  • SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk
  • SMA Comfort
  • SMA Lactose Free

Jodie Wild, head of the incidents unit at the FSA, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: "Ongoing investigations have identified that the contamination originated from a shared, third-party ingredient supplier. We are urgently tracing all products that may have used ingredients from this supplier to make sure any affected products are removed from sale."

Broader Industry Impact

This contamination issue extends beyond Nestle products alone. On January 23, Danone also recalled a batch of its Aptamil baby formula over similar concerns about potential cereulide contamination. While initially only one batch sold in the UK was affected, additional batches in other countries have since been identified as potentially contaminated.

Ms. Wild clarified the connection between these separate recalls: "Both recalls are due to the presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause vomiting and nausea. If further recalls are needed, we will announce them immediately."

Health Guidance for Parents

The FSA has issued specific guidance for parents and caregivers who may have purchased affected products:

  1. Immediately stop using any recalled formula products
  2. Switch to an alternative, unaffected formula
  3. Contact your GP or NHS 111 if your baby has already consumed potentially contaminated formula
  4. For prescribed formula, consult with a pharmacist or doctor before switching to ensure continuity of appropriate nutrition

Parents are advised to check batch numbers against official recall notices published on the Food Standards Agency website and the Nestle company portal. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as the investigation progresses and additional information becomes available about the scope of contamination and affected products.
