Kmart's $45 Trench Coat Goes Viral as 'Perfect Dupe' for Sézane's $570 Clyde Coat
Kmart's $45 Trench Coat Goes Viral as Dupe for Sézane's $570

Kmart shoppers are flocking to stores after discovering a $45 trench coat that they claim bears a striking resemblance to a luxury designer version costing hundreds more. The retailer's new Contrast Check Trench Coat has gone viral online, with fashion enthusiasts dubbing it the 'perfect dupe' for Sézane's cult-favourite Clyde Coat, which retails for $570.

The similarities between the two coats have not gone unnoticed. Both feature an oversized fit, a soft light beige colourway, contrast collars, check lining, and an effortlessly chic European-inspired silhouette that has become one of the biggest outerwear trends heading into winter. This timeless style was famously popularised by Burberry's iconic Long Waterloo Heritage Trench Coat, a celebrity-loved staple that retails for nearly $4,400 and has been worn by the likes of Kate Middleton and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Australian shoppers are thrilled to tap into the same polished 'quiet luxury' aesthetic for less than the cost of a dinner date. TikTok creator Breanna Whitehead recently caught attention when she posted a side-by-side comparison of the Kmart trench against her own Sézane version. 'OK, so I've been seeing this viral Kmart trench coat on my TikTok,' she told followers. 'It's definitely a dupe for like the Sézane trench coats.'

Breanna revealed she headed straight to Kmart while already wearing her original designer coat to compare the two in real time. 'I'm literally wearing the Sézane trench coat today, so I can compare the quality to the original.' Showing the $45 jacket in-store, she pointed out the near-identical colour palette and styling details. 'As you can see, it's got the contrast stitching,' she explained. 'It is a little bit smaller with the Kmart one, but that's OK. Same colourway.'

Trying both coats on side-by-side, Breanna admitted there were some differences in craftsmanship but said the budget-friendly alternative still seriously impressed her. 'It's super similar for a huge, huge difference in price.' She added, 'Final verdict for the price point, 100 per cent go and get this trench coat from Kmart. It's pretty similar and good quality for what you're paying for.' However, she noted, 'It's not quite as good quality and craftsmanship as a Sézane one, but yeah, it's a massive difference in price.' She concluded, 'So girlies, go grab your trenches, autumn's coming.'

The Kmart version features an oversized fit, checked lining, a contrast corduroy collar, raglan sleeves, and button-front closure—all details that closely mirror the elevated European aesthetic shoppers have been obsessing over online. Unlike the designer version, however, the Kmart trench is made from polyester, while Sézane's Clyde Coat is crafted from organic cotton and recycled materials with a water-repellent finish. Still, for shoppers wanting the look without the hefty designer price tag, many said the affordable alternative was more than good enough. 'Omg are you kidding? That's amazing,' one woman commented on Breanna's video. 'Ahh Kmart, always coming through with the goods,' another added.

The trench coat frenzy comes as oversized heritage-inspired outerwear continues dominating fashion trends worldwide, with neutral trenches becoming a wardrobe staple among influencers, celebrities, and fashion editors alike.
