A rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin has sold for £115 on eBay, fetching 230 times its face value. The coin, which has only 210,000 minted, is considered one of the scarcest in UK circulation.
Collector's Item Sells for Big Money
The eBay listing described the coin as "a genuine and rare 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin from the United Kingdom," featuring a design related to the Kew Gardens theme. It noted the coin holds historical and monetary value for collectors interested in British decimal coins from the era of Queen Elizabeth II.
The @CoinCollectingWizard, a collector who previously highlighted the coin, said it is known to "sell for big money." The sale took place on August 11.
Design and Royal Mint History
The coin was released to mark the 250th anniversary of the London gardens and was designed by Christopher Le Brun. It features the iconic Chinese Pagoda at the site with an ornamental leafy vine weaving around the structure.
According to the Royal Mint, the Kew Gardens 50p has served as many people's gateway into coin collecting. The Royal Mint explained: "Demand for 50p coins was not high when the coin was released into circulation, which explains the low mintage of the piece."
