Mum's 'Genius' Hack to Remove Christmas Tree Spiders

For many British families, the festive season is incomplete without the authentic scent and feel of a real Christmas tree. However, this beloved tradition often comes with a hidden downside: unwanted guests hitching a ride indoors.

The Unwanted Festive Guests

While the smell of a fresh fir tree is magical, it can conceal spiders, aphids, and bark beetles. Some of these pests lay eggs that remain dormant until exposed to the warm temperatures inside our homes, potentially leading to an unexpected and unwelcome infestation.

This risk is enough to make those with a fear of creepy crawlies opt for an artificial tree. Yet, for traditionalists, abandoning a real tree is not an option, leading to a search for effective solutions.

The Viral 'Genius' Solution

One mum, Daisy Alula, has found a method that is being hailed as 'smart' and 'genius' online. Sharing her experience on TikTok under the username @daiisyalula, Daisy revealed her family's unique pre-decoration ritual.

After selecting their tree, they strapped it to their car roof and drove to a local car wash. There, her partner used a high-pressure jet wash to thoroughly hose down the entire tree for several minutes.

Daisy commented on the video, "Warning, spiders WERE harmed in the making of this video. If any of them survive they deserve to live." She also noted that driving fast afterwards helped to dry the tree, which they gave a final shake before bringing it inside.

Public Reaction and Horror Stories

The video garnered hundreds of comments from viewers impressed by the simple yet effective idea. One person declared it "the smartest thing I've ever seen," while another admitted it was a smart solution to the bug infestation horror stories they had heard.

These stories were also shared in the comments, serving as a cautionary tale. One user recounted a nightmare scenario: "We had a nest hatch after we brought the tree home our first Xmas together. Woke up to thousands of babies on our ceiling."

Another shared a chilling account of a friend's house being invaded by a nest of brown recluse spiders days after bringing a tree inside, vowing to remain faithful to their fake tree for life. Many others echoed this sentiment, stating that such experiences have made them permanent artificial tree owners.

Despite the effectiveness of the jet wash method, it highlights the ongoing dilemma for families during the festive season: the choice between festive tradition and a bug-free home.
