London's biggest McDonald's, located in Leicester Square, has been granted permission to operate 24 hours a day, despite opposition from the Metropolitan Police and other bodies. The branch, one of the capital's busiest, currently closes for just over two hours each night, from 2.45am to 5am.
Approval with Conditions
Franchisee Capital Arches Group (CAG), which runs 40 McDonald's branches across London and the Home Counties, received approval from Westminster Council for the 24/7 operation. The permission comes with conditions, including at least one door staff member from 8pm onwards, and from Thursday to Saturday, at least two door staff from 10.30pm to 5.30am. Other requirements include child safeguarding measures, staff safety provisions, no deliveries between 11pm and 8am, and a half-hourly litter pick of the immediate area outside the venue.
Police Opposition Overruled
The go-ahead was granted despite objections from the Metropolitan Police, the Licensing Authority, and Environmental Health officers. Westminster Police Licensing Team wrote that the area was "already saturated with late-night licensed venues" and that the additional hours could contribute to an increase in crime. However, Westminster Council's licensing committee found no proof linking McDonald's current operating hours with local crime levels.
Nearby licensed venues, including the Hippodrome Casino, the Londoner hotel, and HOLBA, showed support for the application. Agents Joshua Simons & Associates wrote: "McDonald’s Leicester Square is located in a major part of London's West End with a mix of other late night premises such as adult gaming centres, casinos, cinemas, theatres and other late night entertainment venues." They also noted excellent transport links and the lack of a delivery service due to the central location.
Existing Licence Surrendered
The premises already held a licence since 2013 allowing late-night refreshment from 11pm to 3am daily. The new application for late-night refreshment from 11pm to 5am, Monday to Sunday, will replace the existing licence, which will be surrendered upon approval.
