Fashion Rules to Follow and Break: Experts Weigh In

From not wearing white after Labor Day to avoiding double denim, certain fashion rules created decades ago are still followed by millions today. However, according to experts, some of these style regulations are outdated and may unknowingly make outfits look drab. On the other hand, some old-school fashion rules might feel obsolete, but those in the know believe they should still be adhered to.

Wearing White from Memorial Day to Labor Day

Waiting until after Memorial Day to wear white and putting it away after Labor Day has long been a fashion rule. But fashionistas often question this regulation, touting the benefits of wearing white all year round. Taylor Swift, for instance, has been seen in white on numerous occasions recently. However, experts say there are still reasons to keep the hue seasonal. Stylist and designer Iris Acevedo recommended wearing ivory or cream colors instead, stating that 'bright linen white in freezing weather can feel disconnected, while ivory cashmere, bone leather or antique cream tones feel intentional.' Fashion expert Laura Unruh, founder of LOU.EARL, believes it is best to follow this guideline 'purely out of respect,' noting that wearing white after Memorial Day historically signified leisure and the American dream.

Avoiding Horizontal Stripes

Horizontal stripes have long been a tricky topic in fashion, with some calling them classic and others labeling them unflattering. Scientific studies have shown that dark horizontal lines can be slimming, while vertical stripes may be more unflattering. Acevedo believes horizontal stripes can work with proper tailoring and spacing. Unruh advises avoiding vertical stripes and carefully choosing striped garments, saying, 'My mother always told me not to wear horizontal stripes because they can make you look wider. While that may visually be true, it depends on how you'd like to express yourself.'

Ditching Velvet in Warmer Months

Velvet is traditionally a cold-weather fabric, but celebrities like Zoe Saldaña have pushed boundaries by wearing it in warmer months. However, Unruh warns that wearing velvet in spring or summer will cause sweating due to its thick weave. She recommends saving velvet for holiday parties and opting for lightweight linen and cotton in warmer temperatures. Corduroy should also be avoided for the same reason.

Dodging Double Denim

Double denim has been controversial for years, despite comebacks by pop stars like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and more recently by Beyoncé. Acevedo explains that double denim can work with contrast, referencing Debbie Harry and Jane Birkin. However, Unruh warns that double denim can look rural unless you're on a ranch, advising to 'save the denim-on-denim for fall seasons or a fashion photo shoot while you're in the barn.'
