Roy Keane has expressed ongoing reservations about Michael Carrick being appointed as the permanent manager of Manchester United, cautioning that the pressure will intensify if results deteriorate next season.
Carrick's Impressive Interim Tenure
Michael Carrick has excelled since taking over as interim manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January. The former midfielder has overseen a remarkable run of form, propelling United to third place in the Premier League standings. Victories over Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Aston Villa have strengthened his case for the role on a full-time basis.
Reports indicate that a two-year contract has been offered to the 44-year-old, making him the frontrunner for the position. However, some critics point to United's reduced fixture schedule, which has allowed Carrick more training ground time compared to a typical season.
Keane's Concerns
Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane highlighted persistent issues at Old Trafford, notably the team's defensive fragility—keeping only two clean sheets in ten matches. He stated: "Was he the best option? We don't know who else they spoke to. He's winning matches, but there are still huge problems at Manchester United."
Keane emphasized the need for squad reinforcements, particularly in midfield, to address the goals conceded. "That's his remit—getting players in, adding physicality, stopping the goals. That's the bigger picture he has to fix. When they hit a sticky patch, the question will be whether he has the experience to handle it."
The former United captain added: "He's had spells at Middlesbrough and United, so he has the opportunity. If he does well, fantastic. I still have my doubts, but we'll wait and see."
Comparisons to Solskjaer
Carrick's situation draws parallels to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was appointed permanently after a successful interim spell in 2019 but failed to win silverware and was sacked after a poor run. Carrick remained coy when asked about his future after United's win over Nottingham Forest, stating: "Over the coming days, there will be clarity. Today was about the result and individual performances. Whatever the news, you'll get it in the next few days."
