The Met Office has confirmed that temperatures could reach 26°C this weekend in parts of the UK, marking a return to warmer conditions after a period of rain. The warmest temperatures are expected on Saturday, May 31, particularly in the south and southeast of England.
According to Met Office forecasts, Friday, May 30, is set to reach 25°C, with Saturday peaking at 26°C. By Sunday, June 1, temperatures are expected to drop to a milder 21°C. Areas such as London, Bury St Edmunds, and Sudbury could see 24°C on Saturday afternoon.
This follows a weeks-long dry spell that ended on May 23, after England experienced its driest start to spring since 1956. The Met Office attributed the earlier dry weather to a prolonged area of high pressure, which has now been replaced by low pressure bringing wetter and cooler conditions.
In its long-term forecast from May 31 to June 9, the Met Office hints at the possibility of “hot conditions” developing, especially in the south, along with a chance of thunderstorms. For the period June 9 to June 23, the forecast suggests a mix of Atlantic weather systems and dry spells, with temperatures near or slightly above normal.
