Parents are being urged to immediately discard nine children's products sold worldwide, including eight from US toy maker TheKiddoSpace and a cake decorating powder from Crumb Australia, due to serious safety concerns. The items, which include swings, finger-painting kits, flashcard toys, and more, pose risks of strangulation, poisoning, choking, and burns.
TheKiddoSpace's swing features stretchable fabric that can form loops, creating a strangulation hazard. The finger-painting kits contain hazardous substances such as methanol and ethylene glycol, which are toxic if ingested and can cause skin irritation. The flashcard toys have USB cables with prohibited phthalates (DEHP) and batteries that can short-circuit, leading to fire or burn risks. A felt Christmas tree set contains button batteries that pose choking and internal burn hazards, while puzzle egg toys and a felt book present choking risks from small parts. An indoor air hockey soccer toy also has batteries prone to overheating.
Additionally, Crumb Australia has recalled all colours of its metallic cake decorating powder after a 14-month-old, Dustin Wildman, inhaled the ingredient and was placed in a medically induced coma. The incident highlights the dangers of fine powders to young children.
For TheKiddoSpace products, parents should photograph the destroyed item (cutting the swing fabric in half for the swing, marking other toys with 'recalled') and email the image to receive a full refund. The battery-operated items should be disposed of safely without attempting to remove batteries.
