The Vurger Co, a British vegan fast-food chain, has permanently closed all its restaurants, citing the cost-of-living crisis and Brexit-related challenges. The chain, which started as a stall in Tottenham in 2016, had branches in Manchester, Shoreditch, and Brighton.
In a social media statement, the founders expressed 'incredible sadness' at the closure, thanking loyal customers. The announcement drew emotional responses from fans, with one calling it 'heartbreaking'.
The chain had narrowly avoided collapse in July 2023 through a pre-pack administration sale. Co-founder Rachel Hughes previously blamed the pandemic for 'enormous challenges' and said Brexit and rising goods prices made running a small business increasingly difficult.
The Vurger Co urged the government to reduce VAT and reform business rates for hospitality. Its closure follows similar moves by other plant-based outlets, including Pret A Manger converting its last Veggie Pret stores and Neat Burger closing half its London sites.
