A UK supermarket trip revealed a surprising difference in pricing. Many shoppers stick to one main supermarket out of habit, but a recent first-time visit to Asda proved eye-opening. The author, usually a Sainsbury's customer, found Asda noticeably more affordable on everyday items.
Price Comparisons That Stood Out
Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewell Tarts (6 pack) cost just £2 at Asda, compared to £3.75 at Sainsbury's. Similarly, Mr Kipling Bakewell Cake Slices (6 pack) were £1.67 versus £2.95. Strawberries (400g) were £2.27 at Asda, while Sainsbury's charged £2.75—and the Asda ones tasted better.
Crisps and Dairy Deals
Walkers Quavers were cheaper per quantity than Wotsits and Hula Hoops. Hula Hoops Cheese & Onion Multipack (6) was £1.84 at Asda, versus £2.35 at Sainsbury's. Medium cheddar was slightly cheaper, and oat drink was significantly cheaper, prompting a stock-up. Some items like eggs and chicken breast were similarly priced.
Loyalty Schemes and Fuel
Asda has its own loyalty scheme, but the author believes Nectar offers more. Asda also offers cheaper petrol, adding to the appeal. While prices may fluctuate, the overall savings were compelling enough to switch shopping habits.
