Amazon Power Strips Recalled Over Fire Risk, Thousands Sold
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for thousands of CCCEI power strips sold on Amazon, citing a significant fire hazard. These products lack essential supplementary overcurrent protection, which increases the risk of overheating and potential ignition if overloaded. This defect could lead to severe injuries or even fatalities, prompting urgent action from safety authorities.
Details of the Recall and Sales Figures
More than 5,500 of the recalled power strips were available for purchase on Amazon between April 2024 and January 2026, with prices ranging from $23 to $30. The recall targets specific models that fail to meet safety standards, highlighting concerns over consumer electronics sold through major online platforms. Middle Way Electronics, the China-based retailer responsible for these products, has reported at least two incidents where the power strips sparked and melted, though no fires or injuries have been officially confirmed yet.
Broader Context of Product Safety Issues
This recall follows a separate warning earlier in the month from the CPSC regarding Wagner 900 Series Power Steamers, which were recalled due to a burn hazard from hot hoses and expelled water, resulting in over 50 reported burn injuries. These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in ensuring product safety across various consumer goods, particularly those sold online. Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of defective items to prevent accidents.
Consumers who have purchased these power strips are advised to stop using them immediately and contact the retailer for a refund or replacement. The CPSC continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to stay informed about product recalls to protect themselves and their families from potential dangers.
