Aldi has issued an urgent product recall for one of its popular Christmas chocolate lines after it was found to potentially contain peanuts not listed on the label, posing a serious health risk to allergy sufferers.
Urgent Recall of Festive Treat
The supermarket giant is pulling its Dairyfine salted caramel-filled gonks from shelves. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the 90g packets of the seasonal product may be a "possible health risk" for anyone with a serious allergy to peanuts.
"If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat it," the FSA stated. Customers are advised to return the product to their nearest Aldi store for a full refund, with no receipt required.
Allergy Alert Details and Supermarket Response
The official alert was first issued on Friday and later amended on Monday. Aldi has apologised, saying in a statement: "We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation."
The supermarket has also been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations to help alert their members. This incident follows a similar recall last month of Aldi's Dairyfine crispy choc um's, an M&M-style treat, also due to potential peanut contamination.
Second Festive Recall in Days
This is the second such alert for Aldi's festive range in a matter of days. On 26 November, the retailer recalled two varieties of its Choceur holiday bark: the pecan, cranberry and cinnamon version due to potential undeclared wheat, and the cookie butter version due to potential undeclared pecan.
The NHS lists common symptoms of a food allergy, which include feeling dizzy or lightheaded, developing hives, coughing, wheezing, or breathlessness. It advises that if a person's breathing becomes difficult, 999 should be called immediately.
