Laundry can feel like an endless chore, but keeping your washing machine mould-free may be simpler than you think. Experts say a five-second habit after each use can prevent mould and mildew buildup.
According to Santa Cruz Appliance Repair, leaving the washing machine door slightly open after every cycle allows air to circulate inside the drum, drying out any remaining moisture. This simple step targets the damp environment where mould thrives.
The rubber gasket seal around the door is a prime breeding ground for mould, as dirt and moisture can become trapped in its folds. Wiping it down weekly with a cloth and white vinegar helps eliminate spores naturally.
For deeper cleaning, running a hot water cycle (60°C or 90°C) once a month with a few tablespoons of white vinegar in the detergent drawer can destroy lingering mould. These habits take less than ten minutes per month and can keep clothes smelling fresh.
