The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will automatically issue a £200 Winter Fuel Payment to eligible state pensioners under the age of 80 this winter. The payment, which aims to help with heating costs, will be distributed from November 2026 to pensioners in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Eligibility Criteria for Winter 2026/27
Pensioners born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960 who live alone are entitled to a £200 lump sum. The same amount applies to those living with someone who is not eligible for the payment. Older pensioners, aged 80 or over and born before 28 September 1946, will receive £300 if living alone or with a non-eligible person.
For pensioners living with someone else who is also eligible, the payment ranges from £100 to £200 depending on individual circumstances. Those receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) may receive a different amount.
Automatic Payments and Claim Process
Most pensioners who receive any of the following 12 benefits will get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically in November or December without needing to claim: State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Carer's Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), income-related ESA, War Pensions Scheme awards, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, Incapacity Benefit, and Industrial Death Benefit.
If you do not receive any of these benefits, you must submit a claim if you have not received the payment before or have deferred your State Pension since your last Winter Fuel Payment.
Payment Details and Opt-Out Option
The DWP will send letters to eligible pensioners in October or November confirming the payment amount, which will be paid before the end of the year. The DWP stated: “Most payments are made automatically in November or December. You should get a letter telling you how much you will get and which bank account it will be paid into – this is usually the same account as your State Pension or other benefits.” If no letter arrives or the money is not in the account by 27 January 2027, pensioners should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
Pensioners with a total income over £35,000 will have the payment automatically recovered by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) via tax code adjustment or Self Assessment. To opt out, pensioners must complete an opt-out form before 11:59pm on 20 September 2026 or call the Winter Fuel Payment Centre before 6pm on 18 September 2026.
