Secret lottery millionaire works two jobs due to family's financial illiteracy
Lottery millionaire works two jobs over family money fears

A woman who secretly won a lottery jackpot has revealed she is still working a job she dislikes while also driving for Uber, despite having millions in the bank. The anonymous winner, who grew up poor, shared her story on Reddit, explaining that she has not told her family about her seven-figure windfall due to their poor money management.

Living a double life

The winner, who did not disclose the exact amount, said she continues to live as if nothing changed. She even took on a second job as a part-time Uber driver to maintain appearances. She earns a monthly paycheck of $2,850 (£2,124) and has worried her family by suddenly buying a car and working extra shifts.

She wrote: "I came from a poor family and we used to stress about money constantly. I still haven't told anyone, and everyone thinks my life changed because I started working really hard. I started picking up more shifts and working harder, and I bought a car for my family and myself." She purchased a Hyundai for $30,000 (£22,369) in cash, but her family fears she took out a loan.

Financial literacy concerns

The winner explained that she keeps her win secret because her family is financially irresponsible. "I love my family a lot, but none of us are really wise when it comes to money. I see how my family can go through their whole salary buying random stuff online every two weeks. I feel like we need financial literacy before I tell them anything," she said.

She hopes to eventually help her mother retire and move out of government housing. "I want us to stop living in government housing and just have a decent, comfortable life. I don't want to stress so much about work anymore," she added, noting that she needs to invest her winnings more wisely.

Missed million-pound prize

Her story follows a different case where a lottery winner missed out on a £1 million prize. In May, Allwyn, the National Lottery operator, launched a search for a ticket bought in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole area for a draw on November 4, 2025. The holder had until May 5 to claim but never came forward.

Andy Carter, senior winners advisor, said: "Despite an extensive search for the mystery millionaire, I can confirm that the ticket-holder did not come forward to claim their EuroMillions prize and has unfortunately missed out on this life-changing sum of money. However, the money will now benefit good causes and add to the £33m raised each week for National Lottery-funded projects."
