Jacob Allmendinger, a 21-year-old England supporter from North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, sacrificed his £10,000 life savings intended for a house deposit to take his 80-year-old grandfather Geoff Golliker on a World Cup trip across the USA and Mexico. The pair attended matches in New York, Atlanta, and Mexico City, including England's historic 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium against Mexico.
Viral story leads to unexpected reimbursement
Their heartwarming story went viral, prompting US-based online crypto casino Metawin to contact Jacob via social media. The company initially pledged to reimburse the £10,000 if England beat Panama by more than two goals. When England won only 2-0, Metawin updated the pledge to apply if England defeated DR Congo by any score. After England's 2-1 victory, the company honored its word and transferred the money.
Jacob said: "I was amazed, it was an incredible gesture really. I didn't quite believe it, to be honest, until I looked at my bank and it was there. I was just in shock." He added that he plans to save the money for now, with options including a future house purchase or attending the European Championships.
Grandfather-son bond strengthened by trip
The duo, who have been attending Hull City matches together since Jacob was a child, were repeatedly recognized by fans during their travels. Geoff remarked: "We're getting recognised quite a bit. When we were in New York, a guy came up to us and said, 'are you the guys travelling round?' It was brilliant."
Jacob reflected on the emotional resonance of their story: "I think it just resonates with people. I've had people reach out who have lost their grandparents and how they wish they'd done something similar. It just makes us cherish this time more, really."
Once-in-a-generation experience
Describing the Mexico match as a "once-in-a-generation game to watch," Jacob noted the parallels to 1966, when England last beat Mexico in the World Cup and went on to win the tournament. "It kind of gets you giddy for the rest of the trip," he said.
Before the trip, Jacob explained his decision to spend his savings: "I can always make money back, I'm at the age where I can afford to miss out on a house for two or three years. But I won't ever get to go to the World Cup with my grandad again."
