Newcastle United target free transfer Oscar Mingueza to solve right-back issue
Newcastle target Mingueza free transfer for right-back fix

Newcastle United are poised to address their right-back shortage by moving for Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, who is set to become a free agent this summer. The 26-year-old Spanish defender would provide an experienced option for Eddie Howe's squad, which currently relies solely on Tino Livramento as a recognised right-back.

Right-back crisis at St James' Park

With Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth approaching the end of their contracts, and Livramento nursing an injury, Newcastle have a pressing need for reinforcements. Lewis Miley and academy prospect Leo Shahar can fill in, but Howe desires another experienced full-back. Mingueza, a Barcelona academy graduate, has made 147 appearances for Celta, including 32 at left-back and 12 at centre-back, offering versatility across the defence.

Mingueza's credentials

Mingueza made 47 appearances last season, scoring once and providing six assists. He previously made 66 appearances for Barcelona before joining Celta four years ago. Spanish publication AS reports that Newcastle are competing with Arsenal for his signature. Mingueza was left out of Spain's 2026 World Cup squad, allowing him to focus on securing his next move.

Howe's transfer strategy

Howe emphasised the need for shrewd recruitment, stating: "We need to be ready to twist and turn, depending on what happens. We certainly want a smoother one than last summer. We will need a stronger, tighter squad that's ready to fight next season." The manager also highlighted the importance of player desire: "Every player has been desperate to come and put that black and white shirt on. That is number one for me."

Financial context

Newcastle have already offloaded Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and reached an early agreement for goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. With no European football this season, the club must be smart in the market. Mingueza's free-agent status makes him an ideal target to solve the right-back issue without a transfer fee.
