Blue Badge holders across the UK are being urged to stay vigilant as councils tighten parking enforcement, with fines of up to £70 for violations.
New measures mean that even disabled drivers must now ensure their badges are clearly displayed and correctly used, or face penalties. Some local authorities are also increasing patrols in high-risk areas.
What’s Changing?
Previously, parking attendants might have shown leniency towards Blue Badge holders, but stricter enforcement means:
- Badges must be visible at all times when parked in designated bays
- Time limits in disabled spaces are being enforced more rigidly
- Fake or expired badges will result in immediate fines
Why the Crackdown?
Councils report a rise in Blue Badge fraud, with non-disabled drivers using borrowed or counterfeit permits to avoid parking fees. This has led to genuine badge holders struggling to find spaces.
"We must protect this vital service for those who truly need it," said a spokesperson for the Local Government Association.
How to Avoid Fines
- Always check your badge expiry date
- Position the badge clearly on your dashboard
- Never lend your badge to others
- Report lost or stolen badges immediately
Motorists are advised to check their local council’s website for specific rules in their area, as enforcement varies across regions.
