Letterboxd, the popular social platform for movie enthusiasts, is reportedly in talks with potential buyers including Netflix, Sony Pictures, and Paramount. According to the industry newsletter Puck, the owners of the platform are discussing a sale with these entertainment giants.
Ownership and Valuation
The app is majority-owned by the Canadian holding company Tiny, which acquired a 60% stake in the business in 2023. Co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow own the remaining 40%. The company has been floating a valuation of $250 million, according to the report. Other potential buyers include private equity firms TPG and Redbird, as well as Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, husband to Serena Williams.
Growth and Popularity
Since its launch in 2011, Letterboxd has steadily grown in popularity, with a surge of new users during the pandemic. It now boasts more than 26 million users worldwide. The platform is particularly beloved among young movie enthusiasts aged 18 to 35. Its appeal is boosted by celebrities such as Charli XCX, Ayo Edebiri, and Martin Scorsese, who actively log films, write reviews, and share watch lists.
Letterboxd's Four Favorites video series regularly features Hollywood A-listers like Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman, and Uma Thurman discussing their most-loved movies. In December, the platform launched an in-app video rental store focusing on niche arthouse titles. A press release from Letterboxd described it as 'curated shelves instead of just scrolling lists endlessly without being able to make up your mind on what to watch.'
Unique Appeal
A key draw for users is Letterboxd's narrow focus on cinema. In a Guardian article last year, Alaina Demopoulos noted: 'Most people agree that Letterboxd’s strength as a social networking site lies in what it doesn’t have: there’s no way to message people or post pictures.' The Guardian has reached out to Letterboxd for comment.
