Jose Mourinho has dealt a blow to Manchester United's summer transfer plans by ensuring Aurelien Tchouameni remains at Real Madrid. The 26-year-old France international has signed a new five-year contract with the Spanish giants, ending United's pursuit of the midfielder.
The news emerged just hours after United finalised a £50million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is set to undergo a medical on Thursday. Santos is one of several midfield targets United have tracked this summer, including Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge. Ederson is also scheduled for a medical after Brazil's World Cup elimination.
Midfield Reinforcements Needed
United were keen to bring in multiple midfielders even before Manuel Ugarte's World Cup injury, which could force them to recruit a third. Currently, Kobbie Mainoo is their only fit central midfielder. The club were priced out of moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes.
According to RMC Sport, Tchouameni was determined to stay at Madrid despite approaches from United. Although speculation suggested Madrid might cash in on the former Monaco man, agreeing a new contract was a priority for the club.
Mourinho's Influence
Mourinho, who returned to Real Madrid as head coach last month, has kept Tchouameni as part of his squad. The club have made four signings this summer, but only one is a midfielder, and Bernardo Silva is not seen as a direct challenger to Tchouameni's starting spot.
Madrid also publicly denied interest in Enzo Fernandez, releasing an official statement: "In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation."
Transfer Implications
It remains unclear whether securing Santos would have ended United's pursuit of Tchouameni. With the Frenchman now off the market, United may shift focus to other targets as they look to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the new season.
