Chelsea have completed a stunning £117million deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, hijacking Arsenal's priority transfer target. The midfielder is set to undergo a medical on Monday after Chelsea moved with remarkable speed to secure one of English football's most exciting talents.
How Chelsea Moved So Quickly
Despite England still having to play Saturday's third-place play-off against France in Miami, Chelsea contacted Rogers's representatives and quickly agreed personal terms on a contract running to 2032 with the option of a further year. Villa were fully aware of Chelsea's interest for some time, having been in talks with Arsenal, but Chelsea were quicker off the mark once England's World Cup exit was confirmed.
Xabi Alonso's Decisive Role
New manager Xabi Alonso played a prominent role in the pursuit, in what is seen as the first real sign of his greater decision-making powers compared to predecessors. The Europa League player of the season personally called Rogers, convincing him to join Chelsea. Rogers has been promised regular starts on the left wing, a position that has been problematic due to Alejandro Garnacho's struggles and Jamie Gittens's injury issues.
Rogers largely played as a No10 for Aston Villa but understands that his close friend and England teammate Cole Palmer has made that position his own at Chelsea. The club believes it is no coincidence that two top managers—Unai Emery with Villa and Thomas Tuchel with England—have made the 23-year-old an important part of their teams.
Long-Term Target Becomes Record Signing
This was no impulse buy. Chelsea identified Rogers many months ago as a versatile attacking midfielder who could add quality in the final third. The club-record fee of £117million makes him the most expensive British player ever. There is strong belief behind the scenes that Rogers will continue to grow beyond the player who has been Aston Villa's standout playmaker for the past two and a half seasons.
Transfer Window Plans Falling Into Place
Chelsea headed into the summer transfer window intent on adding more proven quality, targeting at least two starting-level players. They have already signed highly-rated wing-back Marco Palestra from Atlanta, who can expect a prominent first-team role. Rogers becomes the second major addition.
Chelsea struck while the iron was hot and believe they have struck gold, beating London rivals and Premier League champions Arsenal to the signing. At only 23, the sky is the limit for Rogers.
