FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2026 World Cup will receive Super Bowl-style championship rings, marking the first time such a prize is awarded in football's premier tournament. The decision brings an iconic American sporting tradition to global football, according to the governing body.
The championship rings will be presented alongside the traditional golden FIFA World Cup trophy. The custom jewellery is reminiscent of rings awarded to Super Bowl and Stanley Cup champions in North America. FIFA stated that the rings will feature gold bands topped with blue gems and engraved with the words 'FIFA World Cup 2026 Champions'. One side of the ring will display an image of the World Cup trophy, while the other will feature a custom icon representing the winning team.
30 Rings for Champions, Nearly 2,000 for Sale
A total of 2,026 championship rings will be minted, with 30 of those allocated to the World Cup champions. These 30 rings will be numbered and custom-fitted for players and staff. The remaining 1,996 rings will be made available for purchase by the general public. At full-time, players will receive a temporary replica ring, which will later be replaced with their custom-fitted version.
This is the first time in World Cup history that such a prize has been awarded. Championship rings are a long-standing tradition in American sports, given to title winners at all levels, from youth leagues to professional competitions.
FIFA's Push to Appeal to American Audiences
The introduction of championship rings is the latest step in FIFA's strategy to engage American audiences ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Previously, FIFA introduced hydration breaks, which have shifted matches into four quarters instead of two halves, and a half-time show at the final, similar to the Super Bowl.
The 2026 World Cup final is scheduled to be played on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The current tournament, the 2022 edition in Qatar, will conclude with a final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday.
