The Water House Project, a Michelin-listed restaurant in Bethnal Green, East London, is set to close at the end of June after its owners decided not to renew the lease. The restaurant, which opened its permanent location on Corbridge Crescent in 2021, will serve its final customers in just days.
From Supper Club to Top-Rated Restaurant
Chef Gabriel Waterhouse and partner Patricia Wakaimba began the venture as a twice-weekly supper club hosted from Waterhouse's home, later evolving into pop-up events before establishing a permanent restaurant. The Michelin Guide included the restaurant in its listings, describing it as a place where "you just know you're going to have a good time." The restaurant also ranked among the Top 10 restaurants in England in the 360° Eat Guide earlier this year.
Owners Announce Closure with Gratitude
The pair announced the closure on social media earlier this year, writing: "While change can be a good thing, goodbyes aren't easy. Looking back on the past five years here makes us incredibly proud. We've loved our time on Corbridge Crescent and have poured ourselves completely into this space."
Dining Experience and Menu
The Water House Project specialized in seasonal tasting menus inspired by ingredients from across the British Isles. Diners could choose between the Discovery menu, featuring 11 servings for £100 per person, or the Signature menu, which included around 14 dishes for £125. Optional alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink pairings were available. One of the restaurant's trademarks was serving every guest at the same time, creating an intimate dining experience similar to a chef's table.
Chef's Background
Gabriel Waterhouse entered the industry at age 23 and worked at prestigious kitchens including Galvin La Chapelle, Lyle's, The Clove Club, The Ritz Restaurant, and Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons before opening his own restaurant.
Customer Reactions and Future Plans
The closure prompted an outpouring of support from loyal customers, with one diner describing the restaurant as "worth every penny." While no details have been revealed about future plans, the owners hinted at new opportunities, ending their farewell message with "a great deal of gratitude for what has been and excitement for what's to come."
