Manchester United have reportedly contacted the representatives of Julian Ryerson, with the Norway international high on their transfer wish list as Michael Carrick prepares for his first full season in charge.
United Eye Double Dortmund Raid
According to BILD, United are targeting a double deal from Borussia Dortmund, with right-back Ryerson and midfielder Felix Nmecha both on their radar. Ryerson, 28, has impressed at the World Cup alongside Erling Haaland for Norway, while Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy graduate, is said to be United's top midfield target.
Ryerson's standout season at Dortmund saw him assist 15 goals across all competitions — more than double his previous career total. His performance in Norway's round of 16 win over Brazil, where he kept Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior quiet despite a calf strain, has caught the attention of Premier League scouts.
Carrick's Summer Plans
United are keen to kickstart their summer transfer window under Carrick, with Nmecha also attracting interest from Newcastle United, who are looking to replace Sandro Tonali after his sale to Tottenham Hotspur. BILD reports that United have Nmecha as their leading midfield target.
Ryerson's contract at Dortmund has less than two years remaining, and the Bundesliga club are reportedly preparing for his potential departure. Dortmund would consider offers over £26 million for the full-back, who cost them just £4 million two-and-a-half years ago.
Injury Concerns and Future Matchups
Ryerson's calf strain forced him off midway through the second half against Brazil. Norway head coach Stale Solbakken commented: "It was the calves. Fortunately, the injury held, it's just the strain; he hasn't trained enough. He'll look even better in the next game."
Ryerson could face future United teammate Marcus Rashford when Norway meet England in the quarter-finals, with Anthony Gordon likely to be his direct opponent on the left wing.
Dortmund's Contingency Plans
Dortmund are reportedly preparing for Ryerson's exit, with a loan deal for right-back Yan Couto to Como yet to be finalized. Ryerson's departure could allow Couto to stay and replace the Norwegian. BILD describes Ryerson's mentality, pace, and tackling strength as the exact profile demanded in the Premier League.
