Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has described the club's current transfer predicament as an "incredible conundrum," casting doubt on the suitability of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola as a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Barcola's Positional Concerns
Speaking to BetWright, Murphy highlighted that Barcola, valued at over £100 million by PSG, is primarily a left-sided attacker. "The only thing with Barcola, of course, is he’s more comfortable on the left than the right," Murphy said. "He can play on the right on occasion, but really I think someone more used to and suited playing on the right would probably be a better option."
Liverpool have been scouting right-sided wide players since Salah's departure at the end of last season. However, PSG are reportedly reluctant to sell and have been attempting to tie the France international to a new contract for most of the past 12 months.
Squad Reshaping Needed
Murphy, who made 249 appearances for Liverpool between 1997 and 2004, stressed the need for squad restructuring. "It’s certainly interesting and fascinating to see what they’re going to do because the squad needs a bit of reshaping," he added. "There are all these questions around Liverpool at the moment, which is, when you think about winning the league and then what we spent, it’s an incredible conundrum that they’re in really and shouldn’t be in."
Pre-Season Preparations
Liverpool begin their pre-season programme on Tuesday under manager Andoni Iraola and will fly to the United States for their summer tour on July 20. The club faces a critical period in the transfer market as they seek to reinforce the squad following their Champions League triumph.
