Bruno Guimaraes has been urged to snub a move to Manchester United and join Arsenal instead, with former Premier League defender Mikael Silvestre claiming the midfielder would enjoy more regular game time with the reigning champions. The Newcastle United star's future has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few weeks, with a move away from St James' Park becoming increasingly likely.
Guimaraes' Ambitions and Newcastle's Stumble
United, who are heavily linked with strengthening their midfield, have been told why Guimaraes should be a priority target at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Arsenal have maintained long‑standing interest in the Brazilian since his arrival from Lyon in January 2022. Mikel Arteta is keen to reinforce his midfield to ease the burden on Declan Rice, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Martin Zubimendi's long‑term future at the club.
The Brazilian harbours ambitions of playing in the Champions League - something that won't be possible with Newcastle in 2026/27 after their underwhelming 12th‑place Premier League finish. United and Arsenal will both compete in the competition, however.
Silvestre's Surprising Advice
Former United and Arsenal defender Silvestre has surprisingly suggested that Guimaraes would find it difficult to break into Michael Carrick's first team, with the Frenchman outlining why Arteta's side would represent a more suitable destination. "I don't think Manchester United need another top midfield player like Guimaraes after signing Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos to play with Kobbie Mainoo," Silvestre said, speaking to Grosvenor Sport. "Guimaraes will always want to start. When you are starting for the Brazil national team, you need to be starting for your club. So I think Arsenal would be a better fit for him."
Guimaraes' Attacking Output and Suitability
Guimaraes delivered his finest attacking output in a league campaign since arriving at Newcastle, netting nine goals and contributing seven assists across 29 appearances. Silvestre believes the central midfielder possesses qualities that potential team-mates Zubimendi and Myles Lewis-Skelly currently lack. "It was a strange one to see Martin Zubimendi benched last season," he added. "I thought he had some good performances but there were some blips and then Myles Lewis-Skelly showed he had that extra layer to his game, breaking the lines with his running. Zubimendi can't do that. He's a different kind of player, [but] Guimaraes can do both. He's a bit more aggressive, or at least more aggressive than Zubimendi, and to defend your title, you're going to need characters like him. If you want to reach the final of the Champions League again and defend your title, you need bodies, and it would make a lot of sense for Arsenal to bring in Guimaraes."
Newcastle's Asking Price and United's Moves
Reports have suggested that Newcastle are unwilling to entertain offers below £90million. United have already bolstered their midfield by securing the signatures of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively.
