Compensation Details for Costa Concordia Survivors
Survivors of the Costa Concordia disaster received substantial compensation, with the company paying out at least 84 million euros to 3,586 people, according to a 2015 court statement by a lawyer representing Costa Cruises. This included passengers, crew, and families of 29 of the 32 victims. Netflix's documentary Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea features survivor interviews but does not disclose compensation figures.
Passenger Compensation and Refunds
On average, passengers received around 11,000 euros (approximately £9,387) in compensation, according to Cruise Mummy. Additionally, they were given full refunds for their holiday packages, travel, transfers, and expenses incurred returning home. The company also returned property salvaged from the ship.
Crew and Victim Families
For crew members, compensation was negotiated by a trade union, including owed wages for two months or the remainder of their contract, whichever was longer. They could claim up to £2,250 for lost property and expenses. Families of deceased passengers and crew reportedly received around one million euros each.
Recent Legal Settlement
In 2021, an Italian court awarded one survivor 92,700 euros (approximately £79,000) for post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from the disaster. A class-action lawsuit against Carnival, Costa's parent company, was dismissed.
Shipwrecked: Nightmare At Sea is streaming on Netflix.
