The Met Office has issued a 21-hour yellow weather warning for wind covering Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, and some of northern England, with gusts expected to surpass 70mph.
The warning is in force for October 27 and comes as meteorologists monitor a weather system that could develop into a "significant" storm within 48 hours. If it intensifies sufficiently, it will be named Storm Chloe, the next name on the alphabetical list jointly compiled by the Met Office, Ireland's Met Éireann and the Netherlands' KNMI.
Storm Chloe could arrive early
Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel told Dublin Live that Storm Chloe could arrive ahead of schedule. He stated: "The next storm depression is already winding itself up... and it is expected to develop into another significant storm over the next 48 hours. [...] So while we will see some strong and gusty winds through tomorrow Monday accompanied by spells of heavy rain, it's not going to be quite as intense, certainly not as Storm Boulo, which was certainly the strongest of the two storms we've had so far."
He continued: "If this is to be named a storm as we go through tomorrow and into Tuesday, it's likely to be named by the UK Met Office. The very strongest of the winds will be across the northwest of Scotland. If it is to be named a storm it will be of course called Storm Chloe. And otherwise, beyond that it looks like our weather actually settles down."
Warnings and disruption from recent storms
Storm Austen and Storm Boelo have brought a barrage of weather warnings across the UK, with six alerts issued over the weekend, including an amber warning for wind. The fierce winds and torrential rainfall have caused substantial disruption nationwide, damaging buildings, flooding roads and leaving thousands of homes without electricity.
The final weather warnings are due to lapse at 9pm this evening, though a fresh wind alert will come into effect at 3am on Tuesday. The Met Office has issued another caution regarding "damaging gusts" and travel chaos, with winds anticipated to surpass 70mph. The forecaster has yet to indicate whether Storm Chloe may emerge in the days ahead.
