Celebrated Tamil television chef Damu has died at the age of 72 after a period of ill health, just months after he publicly denied online rumours of his death.
Damu, a familiar face on Jaya TV and Star Vijay, was best known as a judge on the popular cooking reality show Cooku With Comali. Viewers affectionately nicknamed him Damu Appa, and he became a fan favourite over the course of his television career.
Death Rumours Addressed Earlier This Year
Speculation about his passing began circulating online earlier this year. In August, the chef was forced to respond in a video message, confirming he was alive and explaining that a leg injection had prevented him from attending a Cooku With Comali semi-final episode. He said he had participated in the finale.
Beyond television, Damu authored more than 200 books and became known internationally for introducing regional Indian cuisine to audiences worldwide. One of his most notable achievements was earning a Guinness World Record after preparing 617 dishes over 24 hours and 30 minutes in a cooking marathon.
