The Riviera Line, running from Exeter to Paignton along the south coast, has been named one of the UK's most picturesque train journeys, with off-peak day return tickets available from just £8.20. Operated by Great Western Railway, the 28-mile route passes through Dawlish, Teignmouth, and the English Riviera resort of Torbay in Devon.
Service Frequency and Schedule
From Monday to Saturday, a half-hourly service calls at most stations and extends beyond Exeter to Exmouth along the Avocet Line. On Sundays, a more restricted service operates, with most trains terminating at Exeter.
National Geographic Recognition
National Geographic named the Riviera Line one of the most scenic train journeys in the UK, alongside the Cambrian Coast Railway and the Strathspey Railway. The magazine stated that it “showcases the best views the English Riviera has to offer,” including turquoise seas, picturesque villages, and wildlife.
Route Highlights
Upon leaving Exeter, passengers can see the 12th-century cathedral and cross a stone viaduct. The train then passes through countryside with canals and rivers, before passing Powderham Castle and its deer park. The route continues through the villages of Starcross, Cockwood, and Dawlish Warren, then through a series of tunnels before arriving in Teignmouth. It follows the river to Hackney Marshes and Newton Abbot, then descends towards the sea through Torquay, passing Livermead Beach and Preston before arriving at Paignton. The journey offers views of beaches, market towns, cliffs, harbours, and nature reserves.
Best Time to Travel
According to Scenic Rail Britain, the route has been dubbed "one of England's best-loved stretches of railway," passing through "seaside beauty spots" for "epic views." Holidaymakers are advised to board in the summer months for the best views, with the most scenic section between Starcross and Teignmouth. A one-way journey takes one hour and 10 minutes.
