Paradise UK Island With Caribbean-Like Beaches Sees Few Tourists
UK Island Paradise With Caribbean Beaches Attracts Few Tourists

A breathtaking UK island, previously recognized as one of Europe's most underrated destinations, offers secluded beaches, unspoiled tranquility, and spectacular scenery. Barra, located in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, secured 17th place in Big 7 Travel's ranking of the top 20 best islands in Europe. Its beaches rival those of the Caribbean, making it a favorite among travel experts.

Unique Airport on the Beach

One of Barra's most remarkable attractions is its extraordinary airport, where aircraft land on the beach at Cockle Strand, but only between tides. At high tide, the runway vanishes completely under the waves. When the airport is closed, visitors can walk along the beach, which becomes a public space enjoyed by surfers, walkers, and dog owners.

Exploring the Island

Once visitors arrive by plane or ferry, they can discover picturesque sheltered coves and a medieval castle just a five-minute boat trip from the shoreline. Visit Scotland recommends strolling along beautiful white sandy beaches like Tangasdale, cycling or walking around the small but incredibly beautiful island, and enjoying breathtaking scenery.

For adventure seekers, guided sea kayaking tours with Clearwater Paddling from Castlebay offer a chance to explore beautiful islands and sheltered bays. Golf enthusiasts can play at Barra Golf Club, the most westerly golf course in the UK.

Recognition and Nickname

Big 7 Travel noted that Scotland's Outer Hebrides are beloved by Scots, but few tourists make it to these remote isles. Barra, despite having an airport, remains beautifully desolate and wild. It boasts the only commercial beach landing strip in the world. The flight to Barra, with turquoise blue waters and shimmering white sands, is likened to flying over the Whitsundays in Australia.

The island is nicknamed Barra-dise, and after exploring wind-bent grassy moors, pedaling along idyllic paths, and walking on empty beaches, visitors understand why.

Other UK Islands in the Rankings

Barra was not the only UK destination in the top 20. The Isle of Rum in the Inner Hebrides claimed ninth place, known for its incredible wildlife, remote wilderness, white-sand beaches, and challenging peaks. The Cuillin Ridge walk is a must for adventurous visitors, but it is not for the faint-hearted. The island's main village, Kinloch, has only about 30 residents, ensuring a crowd-free experience.
