Weardale Railway's Santa Express will return for Christmas 2026, with an early-bird booking deal offering 10% off tickets until midnight on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31. The festive train rides, which were cancelled last winter due to problems with heritage locomotives, will run from November 28 up to Christmas Eve.
Festive journey from Stanhope Station
The trains set off from fairy-light-draped Stanhope Station in Bishop Auckland, where families are greeted by festive music and elves, with more entertainment on board the decorated train as it travels through the countryside. Passengers often wear Christmas jumpers or pyjamas in the style of The Polar Express film, with photo opportunities in the cosy carriages and Santa appearing on route to hand out gifts.
Claire Gibbons, general manager of Weardale Railway, said the team are looking forward to "making this Christmas our best yet". She added: "Every year the Santa Express creates magical memories for thousands of families and we're delighted to be welcoming everyone back this Christmas. We've already seen fantastic interest in tickets, so we'd encourage anyone thinking of coming to make the most of the early bird offer before it ends on August 31."
Ticket options and availability
This year offers two ticket options: a Golden Ticket at £33, which includes shared table seating, Santa's visit and a gift, and a VIP option from £43, providing a more spacious carriage and larger seats. More food and drink options will also be available this year.
The heritage railway, which was rescued from administration in 2020 by The Auckland Project, reports that spaces are limited on various dates and expects remaining tickets to sell quickly.
