Sainsbury's has removed its SmartShop service from all of its Local convenience stores, six years after the technology was first rolled out across those locations.
The service, which lets customers use their smartphones to scan items as they shop, pack them and track their spending in real time before paying through the app without visiting a physical till, has been withdrawn from more than 800 Sainsbury's Local stores.
Low usage drives removal
The technology was reportedly used by only 1% of customers across those convenience stores, prompting the decision to discontinue it in that format.
SmartShop will continue to be available across all of Sainsbury's full-size supermarkets, where the service remains in operation.
Company statement on changes
A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "As we bring more of our services together through one Sainsbury's app, we're making some changes to where SmartShop is available, while continuing to look at how we can provide the best experience for customers."
The move aligns with Sainsbury's broader strategy to consolidate its services into a single app, with the company reviewing how it can enhance the customer experience across its estate.
