Bath, the historic spa town in Somerset, has been named the happiest city in the world for 2026 by Time Out magazine. The ranking is based on a survey of more than 24,000 local residents who rated their city on factors including culture, green spaces, neighbourhoods, food, art, nightlife, community spirit, and overall happiness.
Residents Overwhelmingly Happy
A staggering 93% of Bath residents agreed that their city makes them happy, while 92% said they feel happier in Bath than anywhere else. The survey also found that 90% of locals have positive experiences with their neighbours, and 91% find joy in everyday life thanks to the city's offerings. Community is a major factor, with 83% saying it's easy to find in Bath, and 76% reporting that their sense of happiness has recently increased, with green space and nature topping the rankings.
UNESCO World Heritage Site
Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage site, celebrated for its preserved Roman Baths, grand honey-hued Georgian architecture, and natural thermal springs. Its picture-postcard scene includes cobblestone lanes, pristine gardens and parks, the historic Pulteney Bridge, and sweeping townhouses set within the rolling hills of Somerset. The city draws around six million visitors every year and has served as a backdrop for the Netflix drama Bridgerton, as well as films such as Les Misérables, Wonka, and The Duchess.
Exceptional Food Scene
Bath's food scene is exceptional, with a range of independent restaurants and cafes. Mexican restaurant Dos Dedos, tucked down Bartlett Street, serves tacos and spicy margaritas in a vibrant setting. Japanese restaurant Robun offers traditional sharing plates and bento boxes and is featured in the Michelin Guide alongside 11 other Bath restaurants, including Olive Tree, Upstairs at Landrace, Emberwood, and Beckford Canteen. For authentic Italian, Portofino is recommended, while Cortado Café serves empanadas and artisan coffee. Good Day Cafe offers brookies (cookie-brownie hybrids), Brickell's Ice Cream provides sweet treats, and Kingsmead Street Bottle is a spot for refreshing beer.
Attractions and Activities
Beyond food, Bath offers numerous attractions. Tours of the ancient Roman Baths and relaxation at Thermae Bath Spa, with its rooftop pool offering panoramic city views, are popular. Boat trips along the river, tranquil walks in Royal Victoria Park, and visits to Bath Abbey are also highlights. The city comes alive at Christmas with its famed market. According to journalist Amy Jones, the best way to explore Bath is simply by wandering and discovering its charm, as locals do.
