American Amazed by Scotland's Long Summer Days

An American tourist has gone viral on TikTok after describing Scotland's extended summer daylight as 'insane', prompting a flood of responses from Scots who both celebrated the phenomenon and warned of the trade-off in winter.

Tourist's Reaction to Scottish Daylight

In a video posted on July 13, TikTok user @acesup_253 shared his amazement at how bright it remains late into the evening. 'One thing I noticed here, it is bright a lot! It was 10:15pm and it was still bright out, and then it was 5:15am and it was bright out,' he said. 'That's insane. No where in the States is it like that.'

The traveller also expressed excitement about exploring a castle and gave feedback on Scottish food, praising fish and chips and haggis while criticising the bacon as inferior to American bacon.

Scots Respond with Pride and Warnings

Scots quickly filled the comments section. One wrote: 'Welcome to Scotland. We only get 4-5 hours of darkness in summer but the winters are DARK, only 7-8 hours of daylight so we pay for these light nights!' Another noted: 'We are actually pretty far north, people forget that.' The tourist replied: 'It threw me off lol... just wasn't ready.'

A third commenter confessed: 'Love the long days. Get depressed come September when it gets dark around 8.' Another joked: 'We keep the lights on for the tourists.'

Food Opinions Spark Debate

The American praised Scottish fish and chips, calling it 'fire', and found haggis good. However, he said Scottish breakfast sausages were too pork-heavy and preferred American bacon. This drew pushback from locals who argued that American bacon is 'all fat' and that streaky bacon is available in Scotland.

Recommendations from Scots included trying square sausage for more beef content, a deep-fried Mars bar, and a chicken tikka chasni curry in Glasgow.
