Man Jailed for Life for Raping and Murdering Wife, Attempting to Pass Death as Suicide
Man Jailed for Life for Raping and Murdering Wife

Michael Thompson, 56, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, and for staging her death to appear as a suicide. Thompson refused to attend his sentencing hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, prompting Judge Nirmal Shant KC to describe his absence as an act of cowardice and contempt.

Details of the Crime

Thompson killed 43-year-old Kimberley at their home in Northampton in the early hours of August 9 last year. He suffocated her after years of domestic abuse, including controlling, coercive behaviour and physical violence. Following the murder, Thompson arranged the scene with tablets and alcohol bottles to mislead authorities. He called emergency services at 5:40 am, feigning distress and pretending to perform CPR.

During a seven-week trial, the prosecution revealed that Thompson had made hundreds of hours of recordings of his wife and monitored her activities, including her diet, movements, and social interactions. He was reportedly angered by her new boyfriend, her plans to move out, and her request for £65,000 in their divorce proceedings.

Court Proceedings and Victim Impact

The jury unanimously found Thompson guilty of rape, murder, and two counts of perverting the course of justice. Judge Shant sentenced him to 33 years for murder and perverting the course of justice, and a concurrent 10 years for rape. The judge noted Thompson showed no remorse, shaking his head and making noises during the trial, and ultimately refusing to hear the victim impact statements.

Kimberley's daughter, Athena, appeared via video-link from the US and delivered an emotional statement, calling her father a “jealous, conniving, narcissistic villain.” She said, “How could you murder the mother of your own children? ... The day you killed my mother, you killed me too.”

Evidence and Deception

Prosecutor Miranda Moore KC told the court that Thompson claimed he and Kimberley had consensual sex before he found her unresponsive. However, a post-mortem examination found no alcohol in her system, only low levels of caffeine, paracetamol, and codeine. Suspicion arose when Kimberley's friends and family noticed unusual posts on Facebook and Snapchat, with spelling errors inconsistent with her usual style, and she had been making plans for the future, including flights to visit her daughter in the US.

Judge Shant stated that Thompson made a “concerted attempt to conceal” his crime and “set about creating a false scene to fool the police.” She added, “You were literally trying to get away with murder.”

Background and Impact

The couple had been married for 19 years and had two children. At the time of the killing, they were separated and divorce proceedings had begun. The judge remarked that Kimberley was “on the eve of a new start” and had been a “happy, bubbly and lively person” before the abuse. She concluded, “You deprived your children of a mother, you deprived others of a sister and a friend.”
