UK Braces for Thunderstorms: Met Office Issues Severe Weather Warning
UK thunderstorm warning: Flood risk as heavy rain hits

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as thunderstorms and torrential downpours are expected to sweep across parts of the UK this week. The alert covers large swathes of England and Wales, with forecasters warning of potential travel disruption, power cuts, and localised flooding.

When and Where Will the Storms Hit?

The warning is in place from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening, with the worst conditions expected in southern and central England. Some areas could see up to 50mm of rainfall in just a few hours – nearly half the average monthly rainfall for June.

What to Expect

  • Sudden flooding of homes and businesses
  • Difficult driving conditions with spray and standing water
  • Possible delays to train and bus services
  • Short-term loss of power in some areas
  • Lightning strikes damaging buildings

Met Office spokesperson Annie Shuttleworth warned: "While not everyone will see thunderstorms, where they do occur there's potential for frequent lightning, hail, and gusty winds alongside heavy rain."

How to Stay Safe

Authorities are advising residents to:

  1. Check weather forecasts regularly
  2. Avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm periods
  3. Secure loose outdoor items that could be blown away
  4. Prepare for possible power outages with torches and charged devices

The Environment Agency has also issued flood alerts for several regions, urging people to stay away from swollen rivers and not attempt to drive through floodwater.
