The US military has tested a portable electronic jamming weapons system designed to disrupt precision-guided enemy projectiles, nicknamed the 'Hammer of the Gods.' The system can be deployed covertly from US military vessels and is capable of disabling the guidance systems of long-range artillery, guided missiles, and cruise missiles.
First maritime trial off the US west coast
The US Army confirmed it had been trialling land-based variants over the past two years. Its test earlier in July, off the west coast of the US, marked the first occasion it had been evaluated for maritime deployment.
How the system works
The signal disruptor operates by jamming precision weaponry's positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) signals, which are essential to ensure payloads strike their intended targets. Without that PNT data, according to the US Army, precision missile systems are effectively flying blind, significantly raising the likelihood of missed or delayed strikes.
The system additionally deploys a communications network that guarantees friendly forces can remain in contact even while the Hammer of the Gods is transmitting a disruptive signal.
Joint military exercise
Army officials informed Fox News that this month's trial demonstrated the system could be successfully deployed and recovered in a real-world maritime setting. The testing brought together the US Army, Navy, and Space Force in a joint operation. Furthermore, the US Army Space and Missile Defence Command contributed to the exercise to incorporate space, cyber, and conventional capabilities throughout the drill.
"Joint experimentation is how we prepare for future fights," Lt. Col. Darrin Hall, chief of U.S. Space Forces Pacific, said in a statement. "By integrating space, cyber, and conventional forces into realistic scenarios, we strengthen our ability to operate as one joint team in contested environments."
"This experiment proved that counter-PNT capabilities can be deployed, controlled, and recovered in real-world maritime operations while extending operational reach through resilient mesh networking. It demonstrates the value of joint collaboration in advancing operational readiness," he continued.
Modern reliance on precision weaponry
Recent conflicts have underscored just how heavily modern militaries depend on precision weaponry, the US Army noted. According to the US Army, disruptions to PNT services produce far-reaching consequences across "communications, navigation, and overall mission effectiveness. As a result, leaders are increasingly exploring how forces can continue to operate in environments where these services are degraded or unavailable."
