Storm Boelo forced schools across Scotland to close or delay opening on Monday, with around 38,000 homes left without electricity as gusts of 80mph caused major travel disruption.
The storm struck just hours after Storm Austen drenched parts of Scotland with heavy rainfall on Friday. A 60-year-old man died after being struck by a falling tree in Dumfries and Galloway on Sunday, and two women were injured in a separate falling-tree incident in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross.
School Closures Across Aberdeenshire
In Aberdeenshire, Cluny, Fettercairn, Hatton Fintray, Newtonhill, Strathdon and Tough schools are closed to everyone due to power cuts. Ellon Academy is also shut following storm damage, while Towie School has no electricity or heating. Craigievar School is closed to pupils because of a lack of power, heating and lunches.
Fraserburgh Academy has partially closed, with S1 to S3 pupils told to stay home due to staff travel disruption. Ballogie Nursery, Chapel of Garioch School, Finzean School, Inverallochy School, Lochpots School and St Combs School have delayed opening until 10am because of power issues, safety checks or travel disruption.
Banff Academy, Bracoden School, Kininmonth School and Mintlaw Academy remain open, although specified school transport services have been cancelled.
Highlands and Other Regions Affected
In the Highlands, Applecross Primary, Bonar Bridge Primary, Beauly Primary, Dochgarroch Primary, Kilchoan Primary, Scourie Primary and Tomnacross Primary, along with their nurseries, are all closed due to a lack of water, heating or electricity. Duror Primary is also shut, while Croy Primary and its nursery, Edinbane Primary, and Macdiarmid Primary and its nursery are opening one hour later because of the disruption.
Rothiemay Primary School in Moray and Perth and Kinross' Kenmore Primary School, Glenlyon Primary School and Kettins Primary School are all closed due to power outages. Lhanbryde Primary School and Nursery in Moray will have a delayed opening. In Stirling Council, Dunblane Primary School has been forced to close because of an unsafe roof.
Power Restoration Efforts Continue
Thousands of households were also plunged into darkness as electricity networks battle to repair the damage. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) confirmed at around 7pm that approximately 38,000 customers remained without electricity, despite power being restored to around 54,000. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) reported at 7.45pm that roughly 4,500 customers were still without power.
Although no further weather warnings are in place for Monday, a yellow wind warning will take effect at 3am on Tuesday and remain in place until shortly before midnight.
